I’ve heard a lot about you, captain, the man smirked when he looked Roy up and down, leaning forward as he spoke, you’ve made a real name for yourself.
Roy let his lips pull into a smile as he thumbed the edge of his glass casually. I do got quite the reputation, he paused to take a sip of his drink, for far more than just smugglin’, sweetheart.
Roy has indeed made quite the name for himself, managed to carve out a criminal enterprise, built over the mangled corpses of scoundrels and innocents. Reputation is important, and Roy has worked carefully to cultivate his own, weaved it together carefully with falsehoods and action alike.
I should be proud, he later thinks, splayed back on his sofa, hair mussed and body still sore from his latest tussle. When people say they’ve heard of him – heard of the jobs he’s done, the things he’s stolen, know his name from backroom whispers – he should feel a twinge of pride. Look how far I’ve come, he closes his eyes; it’s been a long way since tiny homes and playing pretend in the yard – a long time since older brothers and dreams.
Roy should be proud, but instead he opens a bottle of whiskey that night, pours himself a glass but opts to drink from the bottle – he swallows it even if it turns to ash in his mouth.
